Gifts Given and Gifts Receved...

Recently I was given a gift that made my day,no! week,no! month.Dana from "Cat in my Lap" made what she called her art purge. She cleaned out her studio and had some things that she just hated to throw away.So she gifted it to other people.I put my name on the list and was hoping for one of her beautiful handmade books. What I got almost made me cry.Not only did I get one of her books but I got two.Yes, two,one big book and one little book. She also sent me 6 of her handmade cards and a bookmark. And the greatest was the hand painted silk scarf.I will be her trash can anytime.
Dana and I meet at ESSA a few years back when she took a needle felting class I was teaching and I am so blessed to have her as a friend now.
Here is a better view of the silk scarf.

Now for the giving part. This last summer I started this rug for a class I was going to teach.I had no plans for it other than a teaching tool. Then came the news that a young man from our church was getting married "at last". Adam and I had become very fond of this young man and I wanted something special for him and his bride. So I got busy and finished this rug for them.

Here you see them after they opened the gift and as you can see they are giving it a good look. She had never seen a hooked rug and now she wants to learn.I never got to teach the class I made this rug for because the class did not make, but now I will be teaching it to Carrie.
I also use one of the cards that Dana gave my for this gift and they loved the card and could not believe it was handmade.
Live Deeply and give a gift today.

Bat rug is done..and just in the nick of time

Dana,I am happy to report that the bat rug is done and off to the party.I did the binding at my doll club meeting and them came home to stem the edge.Next I put the bat wings on.That took a little thinking but, they worked out just as I planned. After looking at the rug all done I could not help but think that it needed something. It just did no Wow me like I was hoping for.One friend side maybe it needed a moon. After cutting a moon out and giving it some thought I know that was not what I was looking for.So off my studio/junk room. After a little looking around I was setting in the floor with boxes of beads. That was just what the Doc ordered.
After the beading was done I ran back to town and dropped the rug off to Eleanor Lux president of ESSA.

You may need the make the pictures bigger to see the beads. Now the rug has the spark that I was hoping for.

I did use the moon that I cut out on the back of the rug for my name and the date.

Now just remember,if you are anywhere close to Eureka Springs Friday Oct. 24 come join us at the Mad Hatter Ball and you can bid on my bat rug"Night Flight". All the money goes to ESSA Eureka Springs School of the Arts.

Rug coming right along...

This weekend I used the rug I am donating to ESSA for the Mad Hatter Ball as my demo piece. This is the third year I have been asked to make something for the Ball. The colors are much brighter in the pictures then what the rug really is.I have needle felted a bat and it will have leather wings. The back ground is hooked.
I looked for pics of the first piece I made for them but I can't found them.I forgot to get a picture last year and I sure would like one.

Saturday at War Eagle Craft Fair

Well, once again we had a beautiful day at War Eagle Craft Fair.I meet so many nice people at the show this year.

Two of the sweetest girls I have had the pleasure to get to know is Candace and Elisabeth Larson the Mother and daughter I told you about yesterday. They make the cutest dolls from sawdust clay and fabric dolls stuffed with sawdust.Hence, their name "The Sawdust Cabin"This is them above with Candace's hubby and Elisabeth's dad,but I I hate to say that I forgot his name.Sorry Mr.Larson.

As I am talking to people at the show I am demoing needle felting and rug hooking and the piece I am working on will be in the Art auction next Friday night at the Mad Hatter Ball in Eureka Springs Arkansas. All proceeds go to ESSA,Eureka Springs School of the Arts.
This pic looks a little weird, looks like big flowers in the background.Dana don't panic it is stars and I think it is going to look good when I am done and that will be on time.

Mad Hatter Ball, "A Big To-do about Art"

Dana at Calico Cat Press has a post about the up coming Mad Matter Ball in Eureka Springs,Ar.It is October 24th at the Crescent Hotel. This event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Eureka Springs School of Art.
This is me 2 years ago at the Ball. I wish you could see my hat and wings better. My daughter helped with my hair and makeup(which I never wear). I was wearing the prom dress I made her.I had on black wings and the hat was about a foot taller than you can see and it had a black veil.My daughter (the photographer) forgot to take pictures of me when we were all done.Adam did not even know me when he walked in the door.I was greeting people at the door as they came in the Crescent.
Plan a trip the Eureka for this event. You will have a great time.Oh! and BUY ART!!

Bead Class Thorough ESSA With Eleanor Lux

Bead class started Friday with 8 ladies. The class is being held at The Lux Weaving Studio in Eureka Springs. It is a 3 day class thorough ESSA.We are having a great time.I have done very little beading but for some reason I have amused a lot of beads. So, I took this class in the hopes of learning how to use some of them.I would love to mix the rug hooking, needle felting and beading all in one piece.
This is what I did Friday. It is the right angle stitch and it feels like fabric. The glasses in the corner are much needed when working with beads this small.

I love to see the beads like this.Eleanor said working with the beads in a bowl like this helps her work fast. You don't need to see the hole, you just drag your needle through the bowl and pickup a bead.

This is my work for today. We moved to the peyote stitch and I worked on a round piece.I did get more of it done at home tonight I will show you pics later.

Work Today Was a Killer;)

Today at work at War Eagle Cavern I had to do little cleaning around the grounds. As I was walking, I come across this old jar and pop bottle.I thought they made a great picture.
We have had so much rain this year that we have all kinds of mushrooms.I wish I knew more about them to know their names. This was a cluster of very round and puffy looking ones.

Here are some I could see from 50 feet or more.Very bright yellow.

This was a tiny,thin stemmed mushroom.It was about 1 1/2 ins.tall.

But, I think this was the coolest one I found today.I would really like to know the name of this one.It was pure white and looked like it had petals like a rose.

This little guy was hiding at the base of a tree when I was picking up sticks that had fallen from the trees in the last storm. He was so cute.

I took a few pictures and then let him go.I don't know if I can handle any more work day like today.
Tomorrow I will start a class through ESSA with Eleanor Lux, on beading.I think I have everything ready so now I just need a good night sleep.I was hoping to take a class all year but this is the only time I could get off work.It is just a 3 day class and most of it is over the weekend.

Vicki

Boats and buddies

As Adam and I came home from work today we looked out upon the lake as we always do.Today we saw something we had never seen before. There coming across the lake this boat???car??? Of course we had to stop and get a better look.I took some video of it too and if I can figure out how I will put it on here.I don't know what you would call this thing but it was cool.I never pay much attention to the boats but it was hard to miss this sight.

This is my buddy Dana in class at http://www.esartschool.com/. I think she has taken more classes a ESSA this year then anyone. This week she is taking "Collage and Assemblage with found objects" with Chris Fischer.I stopped out by the school yesterday to see how things were going. What a lie!!!I am just jealous that I can't be there to.This class looked like such fun.I know Dana will be telling us all about it on her blog http://www.calicocatpress.blogspot.com/.

I do get to take a class next month Leaping Into Bead Sculpture with Eleanor Lux.I am really looking forward to that class. I think Dana is going to that one too.
